The Institut Montaigne offers a perspective on France's economic situation at the height of the election period. Marie-Pierre de Bailliencourt, director of the institute, spoke at a conference in Aix-en-Provence, and according to her, there is no cause for alarm: Europe is solid and ready to support France, whatever the outcome of the legislative elections.
Three main arguments underpin this confidence : Europe acts as an economic stabiliser, thanks in particular to sovereign bonds. France excels in key sectors such as defence, health and the ecological transition. What's more, the country's dynamism in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, research and development, and its pool of talent are assets that make it even more attractive.
However, the real challenge will be to manage the public debt and deficit. The government to be formed will have to prove itself, particularly when the Finance Act is adopted in the autumn.
The programmes of the different political blocs have varying budgetary impacts, and all will have to find solutions to keep France's financial trajectory on track. Despite the uncertainties, the Institut Montaigne stresses that businesses have the potential to make a positive contribution to the economy and society.
